Widseth’s Legendary Lute
When this instrument is played, bardsong grants each party member a total of +3 To Hit & +3 Damage (+4 To Hit & +4 Damage if the bard is 5th-level) with melee and ranged attacks. While performing bardsong, the bard may simultaneously perform a Standard Action (e.g., physically attack, cast spells, perform a Lore check, read scrolls, activate wands, drink potions, etc.) Once per game, if a party saving throw is rolled and a “1, 2, or 3” is the result, the bard may call for a re-roll.
While playing this magical instrument, a bard can perform bardsong while simultaneously engaging in some other Standard Action. It does not allow a bard to perform their Standard Action as a Free Action, it allows the Standard Action and bardsong to occur at the same time. It’s a subtle distinction, but an important one because it means a bard can perform bardsong, perform a Standard Action, and perform a Free Action in the same round. If this instrument converted a Standard Action to a Free Action, the bard would not be able to perform another Free Action in the same round.
WLL also allows a bard to wield an off-hand item while performing bardsong. An off-hand-held item is something the bard could normally use in combat which is held in the off-hand. In most cases it’s a shield, but it could also be a more esoteric off-hand combat item such as (but not limited to) an Orb of Might or Brawler’s Mug (R). Bards choosing to engage in combat with a two-handed ranged weapon may use an Archer’s Buckler as the off-hand-held item when playing WLL.
Rule of Thumb: If the bard can use the item(s) while engaged in combat without WLL, the items can be used while playing WLL. Conversely, if the bard cannot use the items while engaged in combat, neither can WLL.
For VTD Only: The saving throw re-roll is a little different because there are no group saving throws. Once per game, if the bard rolls a natural 1, 2, or 3 on one of their own saving throws, the bard has the option to trigger the Lute’s mulligan power. Anyone who chooses to do so may re-roll their save that turn. Other players are not required to re-roll, but they cannot “bank” the re-roll option for later.
