Nightshade's +2 Throwing Dagger

This special weapon, created at the request of the Thieves’ Guild Master Nightshade, has unique properties in the hands of a rogue when attempting a sneak attack.

If the rogue uses this weapon to perform a sneak attack, (assuming the monster has vital areas and can be sneak attacked) and the damage indicator points to the 🗡 on the damage wheel, Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger deals 10 damage. When used for a normal attack (i.e., not a sneak attack) by any class, the 🗡 deals 6 damage. In essence, the 🗡 could be interpreted to read “6 (or 10 if sneak attacking)”.

If a rogue making a sneak attack scores a critical hit while wielding Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger, all damage is doubled, including the sneak attack bonus. When using most other weapons, sneak attack damage is not doubled on a crit.

If used as a thrown weapon, this dagger allows a rogue to make a Ranged sneak attack without the normal one round delay. When used in Melee, this dagger does not negate the need for the standard prep round when making a sneak attack. The prep round is only negated when making a Ranged sneak attack with this weapon.

Bear in mind, this is not a returning dagger, so after it’s been thrown, it cannot be used again in the same combat. If a player possesses more than one copy of this dagger, each one may be thrown once per combat, but possessing more than one copy does not grant any additional sneak attacks.

Assassin (Sub-Class) Note: The 🗡 counts as a “6” when making a Melee assassination attack. Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger by itself does not allow the wielder to make a Ranged assassination attempt. For that you’d also need a token that specifically allows you to circumvent that rule. (e.g., Lenses of Vital Insight)

Combat DM Note: When determining which number is closest to the damage dot on the combat board, use the 🗡 as the focal point, not any of the characters surrounding it.

Q1) Does this item overcome any monster sneak attack or critical hit immunities?
A1) No.

Q2) Does Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger allow the wielder to sneak attack with a different Ranged weapon as long as Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger is equipped as the character’s Melee weapon?
A2) No. Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger itself may be used to make one Ranged sneak attack per combat by throwing it, but does not affect any other Ranged attacks. (All non-Returning thrown weapons are only usable once per combat).

Q3) Does the 🗡 result add +10 to sneak attack damage?
A3) No. The 🗡 indicates a weapon damage of 10 on a sneak attack.

Q4) Do I need to equip some other token to make a Ranged sneak attack using Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger?
A4) No.

Q5) Can you give me a visual that informs what this weapon can and can’t do?
A5) Sure thing. On the left side of this table’s headers, the “M” column refers to Melee (can I use Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger to do this thing as part of a Melee attack) and the “R” column refers to Ranged (can I use Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger to do this thing as part of Ranged attack):

M R Feature
N* Y Sneak Attack without the standard Prep Round
Y Y Sneak Attack with the standard Prep Round
Y Y 2× Sneak Attack Damage on a Critical Hit
Y N* Assassinate

*This assumes you have no other tokens equipped that would alter the scenario. E.g., if a rogue wielding Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger were wearing Boots of Elvenkind, they could perform a Melee sneak attack without a prep round. In other words, an “N” doesn’t mean that feature is strictly forbidden, it just means Nightshade’s +2 Throwing Dagger by itself doesn’t grant that ability.
