Gloves of the Cabal

Wearer may affect one additional target with a single-target scroll. Only single-target scrolls are affected by these gloves. Scrolls that inherently affect more than one target do not benefit from this item, even if there is only one eligible target. All eligible scrolls the wearer casts are affected. The rarity of the scroll that can be affected is based on the total number of GotC equipped in the party, as shown on the table below. The affected rarity levels are cumulative.

The gloves cannot be used to affect the same target twice with the same scroll. If the caster has more than one copy of a scroll, subsequent castings may affect the target again, but only once per casting. As long as the scroll is otherwise eligible, the scroll’s spell may be of any variety. (e.g., buff, damage, heal, etc.)

The effect from these gloves results in a single two-target spell. It does not turn one single-target spell into two single-target spells. This distinction is important when dealing with multi-target vs. single-target effects and restrictions.

In addition to scrolls that target one monster or one other ally, the wearer of these gloves may also use scrolls that are normally restricted to “caster only” or “self only” to affect an ally as the second target. However, the wearer must still be the primary target. E.g., Scroll Blur normally only affects the caster. With these gloves, both the caster and one other ally could be blurred–but not two allies because the wearer must be one of the two targets.

If the scroll requires a combat slide, you must make one attack for each target. The attack slides are resolved independently of each other, but are otherwise handled normally. I.e., if one attack misses, that target will be unaffected, but the other target could be affected if that attack hits. (To make the second attack, slide an empty puck of a class not in your party.)  If the scroll allows a saving throw, both targets roll their own saving throws independently of one another.

Example 1: The Bard, Cleric, and Druid are wearing Gloves of the Cabal. The Bard casts Scroll Banshee Wail. The scroll works normally because Banshee Wail affects multiple targets. During that combat, both the Ranger and Rogue became infected with lycanthropy. The Cleric casts one Scroll Cure Disease which due to the gloves, cures both characters of their lycanthropy.

Example 2: The Bard, Cleric, Druid, Elf Wizard, and Wizard are wearing Gloves of the Cabal. On round 1 of combat, the Wizard casts Scroll Blink on themself and the Druid. Both the Wizard and Druid are now under the blink effect. The Druid casts Scroll Ball of Lightning but since they are only fighting one monster, it has no additional effect.

Example 3: The Elf Wizard is the only person in the party wearing Gloves of the Cabal. During a combat with both a dryad and a treant, the elf wizard casts Scroll Chill Touch then makes two combat slides. The attack against the dryad misses, but the treant is hit. The dryad takes no damage, but the treant takes 6 points of Cold damage.

Note: These gloves only affect scrolls. They cannot modify spells cast from the character card, magic items, or anything other than an actual scroll token. Spells or effects “cast as a scroll” are not affected by these gloves. If an effect modifies a scroll, only the scroll’s primary target is affected. E.g., if Arcane Scroll Tube is used to boost Scroll Cure Moderate Wounds, the primary recipient of the scroll’s effect would heal 11 points and the secondary recipient would heal 10 points. (The order in which the primary & secondary targets are selected is irrelevant–those designations are completely up to the caster.)

This item is part of the Cabal Set.
When at least three Cabal items are equipped, wearers gain the ability to cast two spells from their character card in one round. (Both spells are marked off the player’s card.) The second spell is cast as a Free Action. Unlike the Bracelets of the Zephyr ability, either or both spells cast in this manner are capable of being modified or duplicated because neither is “cast as a scroll”. This ability is usable once per room.

  • Bracelets of the Cabal
  • Charm of the Cabal
  • Earcuff of the Cabal
  • Gloves of the Cabal

This set bonus does not bestow the ability to cast Spells to classes that don’t already have the ability to cast Spells from their character card. (sorry monks)
