Hat of Escape
To attack the wearer, the monster must succeed on a DC 12 Will saving throw. If the monster passes the check, the player is attacked normally–otherwise, the monster will chose another target. Similar to the sanctuary spell, the effect only works if there is more than one party member left. If the wearer is the only character left alive the monster will attack normally. In addition, if the wearer performs an offensive action* against the monster, all effects of this hat are negated for the rest of that combat.
Once the monster succeeds on the saving throw, it is free to attack that character for the remainder of combat. I.e., it doesn’t have to roll a saving throw every round.
This item does not in any way preclude a monster from performing an area of effect (AoE) attack that affects the wearer. It only comes into play when a monster wants to make a single-target attack on the wearer.
*An offensive action is defined as doing at least one of the following:
- Attempting to cause damage, whether or not the attempt is successful
- Using an effect that requires a magic/spell resistance check
- Using an effect that requires a saving throw
