Ava’s +5 Holy Avenger
Like all +5 weapons, the DM will add +5 to the AC hit when using this weapon but the damage bonus has already been factored into the damage wheel.
This sword grants following:
- If the target of the attack is an Evil Outsider and the attack slide is a natural 20, the target is slain.
- The paladin may invoke grace twice per game.
- The paladin may guard one additional character in one room per game
- Once per game, the paladin gains +15 healing with a single use of lay on hands. The player chooses when to activate this effect.
Grace: The paladin may roll two d20s for a saving throw and take the higher result. Whether grace is used to affect a multi-person saving throw roll or an individual’s saving throw is up to the paladin. Grace may be used whether or not the paladin is directly affected by the saving throw. The use of grace must be declared before the first saving throw die is rolled.
The paladin need not be actively wielding Ava’s +5 Holy Avenger to use grace, guard, or lay on hands. However, if a paladin wants to use Ava’s +5 Holy Avenger, it must be the paladin’s only* melee weapon. The paladin may swap Ava’s out to make a ranged attack, but when/if the paladin engages in melee combat, it must be with Ava’s. This is very similar to the long-standing rule for set weapons which says:
If you equip a hand-held item in a melee slot to fulfill a set bonus, you must keep that specific hand-held item equipped if you choose to engage in melee combat.
Grace in VTD:
- Only the paladin can trigger it, but per grace’s standard usage, the save need not involve the paladin.
- Every person who chooses to take advantage of the paladin invoking grace rolls their own saves.
*If for some reason the paladin’s Ava’s +5 Holy Avenger gets destroyed or becomes “permanently” (for the rest of that adventure) unusable, the paladin may use a different melee weapon, but the paladin no longer benefits from any of the perks granted by Ava’s.
Reprint Note: The first print-run of this token had some illegible damage wheel numbers. If you have one of those misprints and would like to exchange it for a new one with legible numbers, you may do so. Just go to truedungeon.com/tep and select Ava’s +5 Holy Avenger as if you were transmuting it for the first time. But instead of submitting all 145 ingredient tokens, simply submit the single Ava’s +5 Holy Avenger misprint. Our staff will know you want to exchange it. There is no cost to make the exchange, but there is a shipping fee. You may combine the shipping fee with other transmutes and/or with a token purchase. If you combine the exchange with a token purchase, the entire order will ship out after we receive your submission.
